The name "Hartville" is believed to be a combination of the surnames of early settlers Morehart and Willis.

The village is home to the Hartville Hotel, built in 1820, which later became The Pantry and then the Hartville Pie Factory. This historic building stands as a testament to the village's commitment to preserving its heritage.
